RCTC football players spent the morning of Oct. 7 with students from Pinewood Elementary School during International Walk to School Day.

They spent a good hour with students, walking, talking, and joking with them.

International Walk to School Day is a global event, involving more than 40 countries, that started in 1997. It’s become a way to designate safe routes to schools and through communities. It is celebrated every October, and RCTC football players have been participating the past few years.

Colleen Landherr Maddox, former RCTC Community Outreach staff, organized the event for the athletes, along with Public Health and Rochester School District personnel. After the walk, five of the RCTC football players joined her for breakfast at Market CafĂ© – HyVee South.

“My appreciation to the athletes who joined in the Walk to School event,” said Landherr Maddox. “RCTC can be very proud of these young men and how they represented the college.”

Next year’s event is set to take place on Oct. 5, 2016.
