IT Service Announcement, Email Phishing Scams – Fraudulent employment offers and others
Greetings RCTC Students – Welcome back for Spring Semester!
The Technology Support Center (TSC) Team would like to wish each of you the best for Spring Semester, and reminds everyone to be careful when using email.
As a student at RCTC, you use your College-issued email account to communicate with the RCTC campus community, however email is the most common way hackers use to trick individuals into revealing sensitive information. They do this by tricking people into thinking a fraudulent email message is from a legitimate person or organization, and convince you to reply back and will eventually ask you to supply sensitive information such as a password, phone number, bank account number, or social security number.
Often the scam message will create a sense of urgency for you to respond to a job offer or free gift while there is still time, or the scam message may want you to click on a link to go to a webpage to reset your password. Again, there will be a sense of urgency created for you to respond to the message.
Remember: always be very careful when someone contacts you from an address you were not expecting (especially with an offer of employment, a free prize, your password has expired, etc., asks for your personal information, or for you to send them money)–it is most likely a SCAM!
Most legitimate companies and organizations will never ask for your personal information through email.
If you receive any suspicious email in your RCTC email inbox, do not respond or click on links! Please report it by sending an email to email@example.com and one of the TSC Team Members will follow up with you.
