Screen Shot 2015-10-12 at 10.46.01 AMThe football team traveled to Virginia to take on Mesabi Range on Saturday, Oct. 12, and beat them 71-13, breaking a couple school records at the same time.

Nick Rooney broke his own school record during the game with eight touchdown passes. Overall, Rooney has 35 touchdown passes this season, and he is first in the country with that number and second in passing yards. During his time at RCTC, Rooney has thrown 83 touchdown passes, which surpasses his 48 count last season, already a career record.

“Nick continues to put up phenomenal numbers – which is obviously fun to see.  More importantly – we’re winning games every week, which keeps bringing us closer to that ultimate goal:  an undefeated season and a bowl game victory,” said Assistant Coach Rob Neumann. “Nothing less than that will be acceptable to Nick, the other players, and the coaching staff.”

Jalen Esters increased his season touchdowns to 10, adding three last weekend.

Diondre Green and Terrick McKenney each had an interception return for a touchdown.

Cody Stanger had 11 tackles, and Deon Dorvil had seven tackles, 2.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, and a fumble recovery.

The Yellowjackets play next on Saturday, Oct. 17, at Ridgewater on 1:30 p.m.

The Yellowjackets are ranked first in the state and fifth in NJCAA national polls.

 

Volleyball

The volleyball team took on Minnesota West on Wednesday, Oct. 7, and then St. Cloud Tech on Thursday, Oct. 8, winning both meets, 3-0 and 3-1.

The Yellowjackets swept Minnesota West, with set scores of 25-7, 25-12, and 25-9.

Ashely Bichel had seven kills, with Tori Peterson and Jesnasha Jamison close behind with six each. Jessica Foster had 25 assists. Carly McCabe and Peterson each had seven digs. Jamison claimed 10 points, with Peterson and Maria Tibesar close behind with nine points each.

On Thursday in St. Cloud, the Yellowjackets won 3-1, with set scores of 25-18, 18-25, 25-18, and 25-9.

Peterson had 15 kills during the match, and Foster had 37 assists. McCabe had 19 digs, and Foster and Johanna Bungum each had 15 digs. Peterson had 15.5 points and Bichel had 14.5.

The Yellowjackets play next at Western Technical College on Wednesday, Oct. 14, at 6:30 p.m.

The Yellowjackets are ranked first in the state and fifth in NJCAA national polls.

 

Soccer

On Friday, Oct. 9, the soccer took on Anoka-Ramsey and lost 1-7.

The Yellowjackets had 10 attempts at a goal, but only managed to get once past the Anoka-Ramsey goalkeeper.

The Yellowjackets play next on Thursday, Oct. 15, against Century College here at RCTC. At noon.

The RCTC golf teams played in the Region 13 tournament in Biwabik on Oct. 5 and 6.

Brady Becker shot 80-84 to finish 6th, and Garret Stensgard shot 79-86 for 7th place.

MacKenzie Olsen claimed Medalist and a spot in the NJCAA National Women’s tournament in May by shooting 83-84. Alesah Paulsen shot 104-103 for 6th place.
