Student Food Cupboard opens
The RCTC Student Food Cupboard had its informal opening on Wednesday, Sept. 10, and will have its grand opening on Tuesday, Sept. 16.
The Campus Lions Club started a food shelf a few years ago, and it quickly became a much-used resource by students. Student Life started a review of food shelf operations across the MnSCU two-year college system to see how they could make the system better.
After campus visits and meetings, Student Life revamped the Food Cupboard system. The food shleves throughout the MnSCU system had some basic commonalities: overseen by a staffmember; partnerships with external food agencies; a system to collect information on visitors, items received, and number of visits.
The Student Food cupboard is in an easily accessible location and is working with area food banks to keep the shelves well stocked. There will continue to be on-campus food drives during Homecoming, Fan Appreciation, and other events.
“I would like to extend a special note of thanks to former Campus Lions Club Advisor Joe Schlichenmeyer and student member Betty Truitt, both of whom were instrumental in the founding of our campus food enterprise and are responsible for generating much of the goodwill that surrounds this effort,” said Cody Pogalz, RCTC Student Life.
The Student Food Cupboard will be open Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 11 a.m.- 4 p.m., which will give students a greater time period to access food. Students can “shop” for ten items of food at a time and need their student IDs. It is located in CC406 above the cafeteria.
