Yellowjackets move forward in tournaments
The Yellowjacket football and volleyball teams moved forward in the tournament games this weekend.
The Yellowjackets won 24-21 in overtime against Dakota College on Saturday during the state semifinals. Dakota College was ranked 13th in the NJCAA polls.
With 16 seconds left in the game, Drayton Murphy attempted a 45-yard field goal, but came up short and threw the game into overtime.
The Yellowjacket offense had a tough time scoring with Dakota’s defense, but the RCTC defense came together and played well. The defense held Dakota to 269 yards, but at the same time the Yellowjackets were held to 268 yards. The final score of 24 points was the lowest in ten games.
The Yellowjackets face rival Central Lakes, ranked eight in NJCAA polls, in the state title game on Sunday Nov. 9 at 1 p.m. This is RCTC’s 18th presence at the state finals in the last 19 years.
The Yellowjacket volleyball team beat Ridgewater for the second time this season for the top seed spot on Saturday for the regional tournament. The team swept Ridgewater 3-0.
Brianna Atkins had 23 kills, seven digs, and two blocks. Amberlee Dunagan had 40 set assists and nine digs. Haley Lenz had 28 digs.
The Yellowjackets were down 24-20 in the third set, but came back to win. All three sets were tightly won, with scores of 26-24, 25-18, and 30-28.
The regional tournament will be held at RCTC on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 7 and 8. RCTC will play Fergus Falls at 6 p.m. Friday and will play the winner of the match between Ridgewater and Minnesota West on Saturday.
The winner of the championship on Saturday will advance to nationals.
